From the Principal….

Kia ora e whānau,

We finish Term 2 tomorrow feeling very blessed to see the sunshine, feeling proud of our talented school choir and Miss Madeleine performing so successfully at the Kātote Music Festival and feeling very grateful for the way our staff and students have navigated this term so positively and collaboratively! I also want to thank you for the way you are so invested in our school community, the positive feedback we receive from you daily and for the ongoing support you so willingly give us for the myriad of school events and learning tasks, that your children are involved in. Our staff and students are excited about and looking forward to our non-uniform Caritas Fundraiser tomorrow - Friday 5th July. Thank you so much for supplying baking for this and giving your child some money for the Bake Sale. The money raised goes to help the children at Holy Trinity Catholic School in Papua New Guinea, who need our help and support.

I was interested to read about the government's latest Education initiative to improve our Education System :

  • A phonics check at 20 weeks and 40 weeks after starting school from 2025.
  • Twice yearly progression monitoring using e-AsTTle or PAT from 2026.

I would like to reassure you that we are doing these things consistently already and we use a range of other assessment tools to ensure that your children are being measured consistently, from Years 1-8 in terms of their learning progress. As you will be aware we use regular assessment checks throughout the year and twice yearly (mid-year and end of year) progression monitoring using the PacT tool. Please click on this to see what the PaCT assessment tool is and how it works. Please email me if you would like more information about our Assessment for Learning at St Patrick's, I am more than happy to meet with you or provide more specific information via email.

As I wrote about in our last School Newsletter, next term we prepare to teach Sexuality Education to our rangatahi - young people. This is taught every two years (biennially) at St Patrick's School and it is important that we consult with you as parents and caregivers to explain what we teach at each year level, so that you can also talk and reinforce the concepts that your children are learning about. All of our Sexuality Education aligns with the teachings of the Catholic Church.

The Consultation meetings - you have a choice of two - are being run on Wednesday 24th July at either 2-3pm or 6-7pm in our Staffroom. I will send out a reminder closer to the time. If you are unable to attend either of the Consultation meetings, I will email an overview of what specifically is being taught at each year level, in our school, after the Consultation Meetings. Please don't hesitate to email your child's Kaiako - teacher if you have any feedback, questions or require any further information, after the Consultation meetings.

Today we held a successful transition afternoon where our students spent the afternoon in their new class, for Term 3. It was great to visit each classroom during this time, to see the children enjoying this opportunity to spend some time together as a class, before the holidays. If you child is in the new Nīkau class in the Library you are welcome to call in and see the new library / classroom environment. Mrs Kreft and her students have set up a stunning new classroom this week! It was wonderful to welcome Mrs Culling back from her travels and to welcome Whaea Becky Holland, to our teaching team this afternoon.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank and appreciate the wonderful work Miss Madeleine Williams has done in Rata Class and with our School Choir, while Mrs Culling has been on leave this term. We will miss you Miss Madeleine and wish you all the very best for your return to France. Until we meet again ….

Thank you also to Miss Madeliene's mother: Mrs Annette Williams who has been teaching Pohutukawa class while Miss Begg is playing Softball for New Zealand, in Canada. Mrs Williams will continue teaching in our School next term, as a Relief and Release Teacher.

School uniform orders will be available for collection between 1 - 4pm on Friday 19th July (the last day of the school holidays) from our School Office.

Parish & Special Character News…..

Dear School Parents
I cannot keep it for myself but I want to say how wonderful it is to have you in this Parish. It is a blessing for me to have met many of you whether at school Masses, during sacramental programmes or other occasions. You are so important in the Parish’s life.

You are the Church.
To strengthen the relationship between you, God and the Parish, I personally would love to invite you to Mass. I am aware of some hesitations you may have. However, it does not matter where you are at, you are welcome. We all have our own past, but we also have a
future. No one has the right to make any judgements. God loves us unconditionally. “The Eucharist makes the Church.” It is this reason that we are being drawn to be together as a community:

“…become a thriving community where everyone is welcome.”

In addition, coming together for the Eucharistic celebration is also a good chance to make the family bond stronger:

“A family that prays together, stays together.”

Here are a few suggestions:
1. Come to Sunday Mass.

2. Alpha programme: begins Wednesday 24 th July 2024 from 6.30pm to 8.30pm for 10 weeks at St Patrick’s Kaiapoi. Please contact Patricia at
patricia.e.webb33@gamail.com or Sandra at    admin@waimakariricatholic.org.nz

3. RCIA: Commencing on Monday 22nd July 2024 at Chervier Centre, Rangiora from 7pm-8.30pm. Please contact Sandra at admin@waimakariricatholic.org.nz

Once again, may I take this opportunity to express my gratitude to you all for your presence and contributions to the life of the Parish.

I look forward to journeying with you.

Kind regards,

Fr Do Nguyen
Parish Priest
