From the Principal….

Kia ora koutou katoa,

Congratulations to our Year 4-8 Swimmers who participated with enthusiasm, energy and a competitive house spirit today @ our annual swimming sports! Thank you so much to the wonderful parents who came to help us and support, our staff team and Mr Elliott, our Sports Lead Teacher for his superb organisation and planning! Those children who received places / times in our Championship events will go on to represent our school at the Pegasus Zone Championships. There are photos from today's swimming sports, on our school facebook page for viewing. https://www.facebook.com/stpatkai

Thank you so much for ensuring that your children had all of the swimming gear that they needed today and those who created some great house accessories to wear today! The House Spirit was evident and I particularly enjoyed watching the swimming races and listening to the incredible House Chants. So impressive! The results will be in our next School Newsletter.

Over the last four years our school staff and Board have been working and consulting with our school community and Mana Whenua to learn about and research our Cultural Narrative (our school story and charism). As a result of this we have learnt about important people, places and historical events that have shaped who we are today, since our school first opened in 1926. Our first significant change is the names of our House groups to reflect our values and help us tell the story of our school, our Cultural Narrative. Your children all belong to one of these house groups: please note the colours of each house:

  1. Brodie - named after Bishop Brodie - the Bishop of Christchurch when our school opened in 1926.
  2. Hyland - named after Father Hyland, the parish priest who gifted the land to the Mission Sisters, to start St Patrick's School. He passed away the day the land was signed over to the Sisters.
  3. Barbier -named after the Sister who founded the Sisters of our Lady of the Missions in Lyon, France. She sent her Sisters to New Zealand, as missionaries to work in schools.
  4. Vincent - named after Mother Vincent, the first Principal (Head Teacher) of our school when it was opened in 1926.

This term our students will learn more about the history and charism of our school. They will also learn about our new class names which will change next term. Change takes time and that is why we are introducing the changes gradually, so that our children understand why they are changing and understand the history behind all of the new names, before we change them.

The new class names will be explained in our next School Newsletter. Please talk with your children about the new House names and let us know if you have any questions or need more information. Please note children are always placed in the same house as their brothers or sisters - families are in the same house group.

Tomorrow Australian religious songwriter and singer, Andrew Chinn, will be visiting our school to share his songs with our children. Andrew’s songs, such as “These Hands”, “Rainbow”, “An African Blessing” and “Rise Up!” are used in classrooms and liturgies around Australia, New Zealand, USA and Canada. The concert will take
place in our Parish Hall, at 11.20am. We look forward to seeing you there. Our choir have also been invited to a choir workshop before the concert, with Andrew Chinn.

Next week (Thursday 29/2 and Friday 1 /3) we are welcoming Mr Tony Shaw (Catholic Education Review Office) and Mrs Sandra Shamy (DRS St Peter's Beckenham) to St Patrick's School. They are going to come in and review our Religious Education Programme at our school. They will be also talking to our students, staff and members of our school community. We look forward to welcoming them and finding out what is going well and what we can improve in our Religious Education programme!

Please don't hesitate to email your child's teacher, Janine in our school office (office@stpatkai.school.nz) or me (principal@stpatkai.school.nz) if you have any questions, wonderings or information regarding your children.

Ma te Atua koe e manaaki me to whanau,

God's blessings on you and your family.

Kind regards

Trish McKendry

Family Donation

Just a reminder that we offer the 2 types of Family donation each term.

1. This consists of the $150 to one family to assist in paying for an extracurricular activity for a child or children in that family.

2. We also have the donation of 1 term of swimming lessons to one child. We feel that it is so important for our children to have confidence in the water and participate in after school activities. We also understand that these things can come with a large cost so we are hoping this can help many families. The swimming lessons will be available at both the Kaiapoi and Rangiora pools and this is valid for whole year, it does not need to be used straight away.

If you would like to apply for either of the above, please see Trish McKendry and ask for an application. This is handled very discreetly with only Trish knowing the recipients so please don’t be afraid to apply. You have until the end of each term to apply. It takes a village, and we are very happy that we can offer this to our school community.
