From the Principal….

Kia ora koutou katoa,

We continue with an action packed and exciting term! Currently our Year 4-6 (middle whare) children are enjoying a fun-filled Camp at beautiful Living Springs. Living Springs has just celebrated their 50th birthday and has been providing positive School Camp experiences for Canterbury children for all of that time! Many of our staff and parents remember fondly their School Camp experience at Living Springs, near Governors Bay. We are looking forward to them returning tomorrow and hearing about their Camp Adventures!

Our Junior Whare participated in a Poetry Slam for their parents and caregivers this morning and learnt a poem off by heart, to perform in front of an audience. They were all so confident and excited about standing up to present their poem!

Next Thursday 31st August… Fran and Indie are organising a school wide dress up / non-uniform day to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House in Christchurch. This wonderful House provides accomodation for families of children who have cancer, while they are having their treatment. Children are invited to dress up as someone who they would like be to be when they grow up … the sky is the limit! Could your child please bring a gold coin donation to help the Ronald McDonald House.

Our Year 4-8 students have their School Speech Finals next Wednesday 30th August from 9.30am, in our School Hall. Parents and Caregivers are most welcome to join us for the Year 4-8 Speech Finals. We would please ask that people stay for the entire Year group and that no one leaves during a speech.

The timetable is as follows:

9.30am: Year 4:  4 finalists  followed by Year 5: 4 finalists

11am: Year 6 : 4 finalists, followed by Year 7 @ 11.30am: 4 finalists, followed by Year 8 @ midday: 4 finalists.

Our 3-Way (Parents, Student and Teacher) Learning Conferences are scheduled for Monday 18th September 3.15-7pm, and Tuesday 19th September 3.15-6.30pm. This year you are able to book your Conferences (Interviews) via our School Management System (HERO). Please click on this link to see how to do this. Bookings are now OPEN in your HERO App and you should have received an email notification regarding this.

It is quick and easy to book, once you have read the link below:

The focus of these important Learning Conferences is:

  1. To celebrate and acknowledge your child's strengths and learning progress and achievements to date.
  2. To find how your child is working, learning and socialising in their class.
  3. To share any important information and ask questions of the teacher.
  4. To set learning goals for Reading, Writing and Mathematics for Term 4.

On 5th September we are planning a Literacy Parent Education Workshop for all Year 1-3 Parents and Caregivers at 2pm and repeated again at 6pm, on Tuesday 5th September. You can choose one time to attend. We will be explaining how our Reading and Writing Programme works at St Patrick's School. We will cover:

  1. The Structured Literacy programme - how it works, the stages, what heart words are, how children learn to spell, read and write
  2. The Daily Reading Rotations
  3. The Daily Writing Programme
  4. The 6 Year Old Survey and Literacy Boost Programme (previously called Reading Recovery)
  5. Ways to support your child at home with Reading and Writing
  6. A chance to ask questions / wonderings

This will be held in the Junior Whare. Our children will be in the Library from 2pm that day with Mrs McKendry, continuing their class programme.

Please RSVP to your child's teacher ASAP, if you are able to attend the Literacy Parents Workshop, with the time that works for you, for catering purposes!

Ma te Atua koe e manaaki me to whanau,

God's blessings on you and your family.

Kind regards

Trish McKendry

Family Donation

Just a reminder that we offer the 2 types of Family donation each term.

This consists of the $150 to one family to assist in paying for an extracurricular activity for a child or children in that family.

We also have the donation of 1 term of swimming lessons to one child. We feel that it is so important for our children to have confidence in the water and participate in after school activities. We also understand that these things can come with a large cost so we are hoping this can help many families. The swimming lessons will be available at both The Kaiapoi and Rangiora pools and this is valid for whole year, it does not need to be used straight away.

If you would like to apply for either of the above, please see Trish McKendry and ask for an application. This is handled very discreetly with only Trish knowing the recipients so please don’t be afraid to apply. You have until the end of each term to apply. It takes a village, and we are very happy that we can offer this to our school community.

  • St Patrick’s School Twilight Fete 28th October- Keep an eye out for further details.

This winter, between Monday 12 June and Saturday 30 September, participating community pharmacies in Canterbury will provide a Minor Health Conditions Service for Māori and Pacific people, children aged under 14 years, and community service card holders.

The service allows pharmacists to have a clinical consultation and provide advice as well as medication if needed for a select set of minor ailments at no cost to the patient.

It also includes whānau members of a child with similar symptoms. For example, if the pharmacist determines your child needs treatment for scabies and they have older brothers or sisters, or you yourself also have symptoms, they can provide advice and medication for all of you.

The following health conditions are included in the Minor Health Conditions Service:

  • Acute diarrhoea
  • Dehydration
  • Eye inflammation and infections
  • Scabies
  • Headlice
  • Pain and fever
  • Eczema/Dermatitis
  • Minor skin infections

If your condition needs further support, the pharmacist can tell you the best place to go for your condition to get further help.

Let’s spread the word to our friends and whānau about this new service! It’s also important to remember that you can always speak to your local pharmacist for free health advice, even if you are not eligible for this service.

Participating pharmacies can be found by going to HealthPoint and searching “Minor Ailments”. You can also find a list here www.tewhatuora.govt.nz/go-well
