From the Principal….

Kia ora koutou katoa,

We have had a wonderful few weeks at St Patrick's School, term 3 continues to provide lots of enjoyable school based and community based events for our children. Next week, our Year 4-8 Kapahaka Group are performing in the North Canterbury Kapahaka Festival at Rangiora Baptist Church, on Thursday 17th August in the morning. The group will depart by bus from St Patrick's at 9am, so need to be at school by 8.30am that day. Tickets are $10 each, please let Janine in our Office know if you would like tickets. We wish our Kapahaka group all the best and thank Matua Norm and Whaea Bonnie for all their wonderful mahi with our tamariki!

We will be departing school by bus at 9.45am and returning by 12.30pm for lunch.

We would really appreciate some parents from each class coming with us, if you able to help with supervision can you please email or pop in see your child's class teacher.

Thank you so much to the people who completed our Strategic Plan Survey. This is going to enable our School Board to use the valuable information you shared with us to formulate a Strategic Plan for the next three years. Our school is growing and we need to ensure that we plan and prepare carefully for this growth maintaining the things that are working well for our students, moving away from the things that aren't working well for our students and continually improving the education that your family is receiving in our Catholic School.

The winners of the three CBK Restaurant $100 vouchers for the most detailed and comprehensive answers to our Survey questions were:

  • Lizzie Sherbourne
  • Charlene Joslen
  • Andrew Atkinson

Congratulations to you, your CBK vouchers are ready to be collected from Janine at our School Office.

This term our School Board are consulting our School Community on Cohort Entry. What is Cohort Entry? Children are able to start school in cohorts (groups) after they have turned five.

There will be two entry points per term:

  • one on the first day of term
  • one at a mid-point during a term.

It means our five year old children would start school at the beginning of a term or the mid-point of a term, rather than their birthday.

You can read more about Cohort Entry by clicking on the Ministry Of Education's link:

https://www.education.govt.nz/school/managing-and-supporting-students/starting-school/cohort-entry-in-schools/

We will also be consulting with our main feeder Pre-Schools.

Please email principal@stpatkai.school.nz if you have any views, suggestions, questions or comments to share, on St Patrick's School adopting Cohort Entry, in Term One 2024.

We have a Staff verses Year 7 & 8 students Basketball Game, planned for lunchtime tomorrow!  We will need all of the luck we can get!
Next Friday, will be the Staff verses Year 5/6 students game!

Ma te Atua koe e manaaki me to whanau,

God's blessings on you and your family.

Kind regards

Trish McKendry

Parish & Special Character News…..

Next Tuesday 15th August is …. The Assumption of Mary.

Assumption day commemorates the belief that when Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, died, her body was ‘assumed’ into heaven to be reunited with her soul, instead of going through the natural process of death.

As a school we will be attending Mass in our St Patrick's Church @ midday. Families are welcome to join us.

Please note: the school will not be attending the Parish Mass on Friday 18th August @ 9.30am.

Please keep Father John (Bishop - Elect) in your prayers as he recovers from his heart surgery. Your healing prayers are helping him immensely after his surgery.

We are planning another Baptism class  this term. Please email jculling@stpatkai.school.nz if your child is keen to be Baptised. The Baptism preparation classes are held here at school.

Our Parish Mass is every Sunday @ 9am in our beautiful Church. All very welcome ….

Please pray for….

…… those people in our school community who have ongoing health issues and need constant care, medication and support.

Eternal rest grant to those people who have died recently, may perpetual light shine upon them, may they rest in peace.

 🙏💕🙏💕🙏💕🙏💕🙏💕

Please pray for all of those people who are unwell in our Parish and School Community, and those families who have recently lost a family member. May they Rest in Peace.

Parents and whanau are most welcome to join us for our weekly School Mass, each Friday @ 9.30am. You are also welcome to come and join us for morning tea in our staffroom, after Mass.

PTA News

Whittaker’s Chocolate

Thankyou to everyone’s involvement with this! It was great to see so much enthusiasm in selling these chocolate bars! We had multiple families selling more than one box. Thankyou for your support. Please if you have not paid, please get in touch if you have not heard from us.

Picnic Tables

The PTA have purchased seven new picnic tables. We were able to use most of the Whittaker’s Chocolate Profit for this, so thankyou to everyone!!! We would also like to thank Eddie Sherbourne’s Grandad for paying for the delivery of the tables. We are selling the old tables in return for a donation. If you are interested in any of the old picnic tables please contact Rebecca 021361475.

Contact pta@stpatkai.school.nz or Rebecca 021361475

Uniforms

The PTA is handing over the New Uniform orders to the School Office from September 14th. The 14th September will be the next order.  There will be new Uniform Order forms available from this week. Thankyou to Janine and St Patrick’s School for taking this on.

Family Donation

Just a reminder that we offer the 2 types of Family donation each term.

  1. This consists of the $150 to one family to assist in paying for an extracurricular activity for a child or children in that family.
  2. We also have the donation of 1 term of swimming lessons to one child. We feel that it is so important for our children to have confidence in the water and participate in after school activities. We also understand that these things can come with a large cost so we are hoping this can help many families. The swimming lessons will be available at both The Kaiapoi and Rangiora pools and this is valid for whole year, it does not need to be used straight away.

If you would like to apply for either of the above, please see Trish McKendry and ask for an application. This is handled very discreetly with only Trish knowing the recipients so please don’t be afraid to apply. You have until the end of each term to apply. It takes a village, and we are very happy that we can offer this to our school community.

This winter, between Monday 12 June and Saturday 30 September, participating community pharmacies in Canterbury will provide a Minor Health Conditions Service for Māori and Pacific people, children aged under 14 years, and community service card holders.

The service allows pharmacists to have a clinical consultation and provide advice as well as medication if needed for a select set of minor ailments at no cost to the patient.

It also includes whānau members of a child with similar symptoms. For example, if the pharmacist determines your child needs treatment for scabies and they have older brothers or sisters, or you yourself also have symptoms, they can provide advice and medication for all of you.

The following health conditions are included in the Minor Health Conditions Service:

  • Acute diarrhoea
  • Dehydration
  • Eye inflammation and infections
  • Scabies
  • Headlice
  • Pain and fever
  • Eczema/Dermatitis
  • Minor skin infections

If your condition needs further support, the pharmacist can tell you the best place to go for your condition to get further help.

Let’s spread the word to our friends and whānau about this new service! It’s also important to remember that you can always speak to your local pharmacist for free health advice, even if you are not eligible for this service.

Participating pharmacies can be found by going to HealthPoint and searching “Minor Ailments”. You can also find a list here www.tewhatuora.govt.nz/go-well
